Today, I reload, reset, and relaunch.
When I started my photography business almost nine years ago, I didn’t have an identity as a photographer. In all honesty, I was still learning how to use my camera and how to use professional editing software. But within a month, I discovered presets and built two custom, trendy presets. At the time, matte editing was huge. And I wanted to fit in. So I built a matte preset that would set me apart from other photographers in the Sault region, but also make me fit within the larger photography industry. I did the same for black and white edits, creating a trendy monochromatic preset.
Those two presets have fared me well. They’ve helped me create my renowned brand identity. People can look at a photograph and instantly tell that it is a Meaghan Kent Photography INC. photo.
But somewhere in the last four to five years, I’ve longed for something more. Something different.
In my little free time, I’ve played around with other presets and trends, but never found anything that remotely interests me. I’m not trendy. I actually really hate photography trends. They come and go all too quickly, and all you're left with is outdated photographs hanging on your wall that shout the era they were taken. In 2020, everyone was leaning toward the orange-tanned edits, where everyone looked like Oompa Loompas. Today, we’ve got obnoxious directed flash photography for wedding receptions that we’re classifying as “editorial”. In a year or two, something new will come along and replace these styles… Don’t get me wrong. Trends can be beautiful, but they’re far from timeless.
This past month, I’ve had more time on my hands to really figure out who I want to be as a photographer. I don’t want to be a matte editor anymore. I actually found myself in a state of writer’s block but for photographers - I was unable to edit photos in my current style because it repulsed me. It gave me the ick. And this is when I realized, I need something new. Something to inspire the creative in me once again.
So who do I want to be? I want to be bold. I want to be colourful. I want to be real. But most importantly, I want to be timeless. I want you to look at your photographs and not know when they were taken. Maybe they were taken today. Maybe a year from now, a decade from now, and so on. I only want your outfits to really give away the timeline, not my editing style.
So today, I relaunch my identity as Meaghan Kent Photography, INC.
Today, I am the classic, timeless, bold, but beautiful editor. Your photos will now be vibrant, sharp, and crisp. Unapologetic. And real. True to colour. Whites will be white and blacks will be black, and everything in between. Now, my photographs will live in full, screaming colour.
What does this mean for my clients? You’ll now be receiving your photos in screaming colour, edited in my new, custom preset. All photos will still be fully edited as before - your blemishes, wrinkles, and outfit faux pas will still be rendered fixed - but your photos will be more lively.
My black and white edits will remain the same for the time being. I'm not yet ready to part with my monochromatic style.
And if you don’t like my new look, that’s no problem. You can still have my matte edit. You just have to ask for it before I edit your gallery. My matte preset is mine, it’s trademarked, and it’s not going anywhere. But you won’t be seeing it again on my timelines or on my Instagram grid. Now, we live in full, screaming colour.
My wedding clients, I will be discussing these changes with each of you individually. Weddings that are already shot, will be edited in my matte preset, unless you ask for otherwise.
And if you’re loving the new look so much that you want an older gallery edited in this colourful manner, just ask. I will be doing re-edits for those who request at an additional charge.
